Coffee has proven health benefits. A recent study by the BMJ found that consuming 3-4 cups of coffee a day can actually lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, liver disease and several types of cancer. This is because coffee is packed with antioxidants. These antioxidants are important because they combat what are known as ‘free radicals’ – molecules which can damage cell structures.
As well as providing benefits from antioxidants, the caffeine contained in coffee can also have positive effects. Not only does caffeine make us more alert, improve energy levels and boost cognitive function, it can help us burn fat. In fact, one study found drinking coffee can boost metabolism by as much as 11%, which means you burn more calories over the course of a day.
